Ó Allen Sundholm, 1998.LAST UPDATE: 25th August 1998
Taxonomic Arrangement
: Taxonomic arrangement is after BELLAMY, C. L. 1986. The Higher Classification of Australian Buprestidae, with the Description of a New Genus and Species (Coleoptera). Aust. J. Zool., 1986, 34: 583-600.Regional Boundaries: The Sydney Region is here largely treated as that area defined by Branigan et al being generally the water catchment areas of the Sydney Basin, as adapted by Beadle, Evans, Carolin & Tindale in "Flora of the Sydney Region" (Reed Books), and as modified by myself. The distributional definition using water catchments was first used as regards Buprestidae by WILLIAMS, G. AND WILLIAMS, T. A. 1983, A List of the Buprestidae (Coleoptera) of the Sydney Basin, New South Wales, with Adult Food Plant Records and Biological Notes on Food Plant Associations. Aust. Ent. Mag., 9: 81-93. The Sydney region is quite a huge area, and the validity of encompassing such a large area becomes more a value judgement of the practicalities of that basis versus any other basis. The Sydney Region is so diverse in its landforms and habitats that Sydney and its surrounds cannot be defined solely by any one particular habitat, flora group or landform. Whether or not the use of catchments is a sufficient basis for defining the Sydney region is entirely valid is an open question, but until a better alternative is offered, I generally follow WILLIAMS & WILLIAMS. Therefore, some species listed here are species which have distributional ranges that just impinge into the region, and such species of note include Calodema and Metaxymorpha species. Perhaps these outlying areas should be given extra-limital status i.e. "abutting" the Sydney Region as defined by some smaller area, and a future revision of these pages may well reflect such a change.
Another basis that might be used to define the Sydney Region is "the average distance one can travel to from the centre of Sydney, and still have time for field work, during an average day's drive". This may be just as valid a basis as any, given the Sydney's regions' incredible ecological diversity, and certainly very practical from a Sydney day-tripper's point of view. In effect, the limits of the Sydney basin has considerable commonality with this latter "one day's travel-time" basis!
The subregions used here are largely my own devices.
Sources of Specimen & Locality Data: Williams & Williams 1983, Hawkeswood 1978a, Hawkeswood 1987b, Webb 1987, J. Bugeja unpub., M. Hanlon unpub., R. Mayo unpub., A. Sundholm unpub., A. Sundholm & R. de Keyzer unpub. This work is based on an unpublished report prepared by A. Sundholm (Ó A. Sundholm) for the State Crown Solicitor of New South Wales on behalf of the National Parks and Wildlife Service of New South Wales, 1996.
An illustrated glimpse into what it's like to go bupresting around Sydney is described in Bupresting Around Sydney

Sub-region 5:
IL Illawarra
A species occurs within an area if an asterisk appears in the column below its heading. The numbers for each area are totalled at the bottom of each column. The urbanised area east of the Cumberland Plain, being the majority of the urbanised and industrialised portion of Sydney, is presently excluded, due to a lack of adequate historical data. Note also that this table represents the minimum number of species that are known to the author from each area. Further research will likely show that additional species have been omitted or overlooked, and additional field work may reveal undescribed species
.Any additional data or corrections that others may have to offer will be most welcome and will be fully accredited.
Recent additions, received with thanks
:Themognatha fortnumi, Themognatha sanguiniventris, Themognatha vitticollis (per M. Hanlon, pers. comm.)
Clicking on a hyperlinked species name (i.e. written in blue) will take you to an illustration of that species elsewhere in this web site. You will then be able to return to where you left from that page (isn't hyperlinking wonderful when it works???).
CHECKLIST
Checklist hyperlink arrangement is
Ó Allen Sundholm, April-August 1998. Note: from time to time these pages are revised and re-uploaded to my ISP. Once "on the net", a few hyperlinks sometimes no longer work, and such is the finicky nature of HTML Failed links will hopefully be corrected in future uploads. If you find any that don't appear to work I would be much appreciative if you could please tell me about them. My apologies.Click on a name in the Checklist Index below to jump directly down to the subfamily, tribe or genus of your choice, then use the hyperlink arrows to navigate within the Checklist.
To return to the Checklist Index of Names after jumping to a subfamily, tribe or genus, click on the "Ý " arrow in the far left column of the table. A "ß " arrow in the table at the right of a name means jump down to the next subfamily, tribe or genus as appropriate to level and group you are presently in, and an "Ý " arrow at the right of the names means go up to the next subfamily, tribe or genus, similarly as appropriate.
